Acanthosis Nigricans

Acanthosis Nigricans are patches of velvety, raised, pigmented skin that generally occur in skin folds on the body (armpits, neck, beneaeth the breasts, stomach, groin, knees, elbows, knuckles) and is caused by an excess of insulin in the body which as it is unable to be excreted is deposited in the skin.

As exercise encurages the body to utilise insulin and increases the cells sensitivity to insulin, this will help to some extent, as will losing weight. Many cases of AN have disappeared when the person returned to a normal weight range.

Other treatments available include topical retinoids such as Retin-A which increase the rate at which the skin cells renew themselves, dermabrasion and laser therapy.
