How Can I Stop A Period That’s Been Going For Too Long?

Periods that are either too long or too heavy are a common complaint amongst women with PCOS.

If you feel that your are suffering because of loss of blood, either because a period has lasted for a long time (more than 10 days) or the bleeding is excessively heavy, there are a few things that can help to put an end to it and encourage your body to stop bleeding.  If this is unusual for you, you should also seek medical advice to try and find the cause, though heavy and irregular bleeding is common feature of PCOS.

Vitamin C

High doses of Vitamin C may help to stop bleeding.

2 grams immediately, then 1 gram every hour until the stool begins to loosen, then cutting back to 500 mg every hour may help to slow bleeding.

Herbs

The following herbal tea recipe will help to stop bleeding and balance your hormones.

  • 3 tbsp Yarrow
  • 2 tbsp Red Raspberry Leaf
  • 3 tbsp Lady’s Mantle
  • 3 tbsp Shepherds Purse
  • 3 tbsp Crushed Coriander seeds/ Coriander powder.

Add herbs to 2 liters (1 3/4 quarts) of cold water in a covered pyrex saucepan, then gently bring to the boil.

Boil for 1 minute, then turn the heat down to a gentle simmer for 10 minutes, then remove from heat.

Drink half a cup of the tea every hour. Sipping it throughout the hour is best, though you may start off with a whole cup immediately.

If you have a herbalist that sells tinctures nearby you could also have this made up as a tincture. It may be more effective that way though they are unlikely to have the Coriander. You may need to buy coriander seeds or powder separately.

Progesterone

If you have access to Natural Progesterone Cream you can use this to bring an end to a period that has gone on for longer than you feel is healthy or to stop intermittent bleeding that lasts for weeks or months.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS)

There are a couple of over the counter NSAIDS which can be used to slow down heavy menstrual bleeding.  Ibuprofen (Nurofen, Brufen, Advil) and naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve, Naprogesic).  When taken from the start of a period or just before, and then 3-4 times a day until the period stops, they have been shown to reduce blood loss by between 20-49%.

NSAIDs work by reducing your body’s production of prostaglandins, a hormone-like substance, high levels of which are linked to heavy periods. NSAIDs are also anti-inflammatories and painkillers.  Ibuprofen causes the blood vessels to constrict, though inhibition of a prostacyclin, produced by cyclooxygenase-2 or COX-2 enzymes, which dilate blood vessels.

Common side effects of NSAIDs include indigestion and diarrhoea, so it’s best not to use them unless you need them.  NSAIDs can be used for an indefinite number of menstrual cycles, as long as they are relieving symptoms of heavy blood loss and are not causing significant adverse side effects.

Progestogens

New research published Feb. 11, 2013 has found that a 150-milligram injection of Depomedroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), known commercially as Depo-Provera, followed up by a medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) 20 milligram pill taken orally every eight hours for three days was successful in stopping acute, excessive uterine bleeding in a study of 48 women.  Within 5 days, 44 of those women had stopped bleeding, with a mean time of 2.6 days to when the bleeding stopped.

“This is the largest prospective study to date to measure the effectiveness of a proposed hormonal treatment for excessive uterine bleeding,” said Dr. Anita L. Nelson M.D. one of the study authors. ”The women in the study experienced excellent success with this relatively low dose progestogen-only therapy. This therapy also has the potential for offering longer-term protection than prior therapies.”

For women who do not tolerate oestrogen well, or those who have oestrogen dominance, a condition which is common in PCOS, this new treatment option provides many benefits and was reportedly well tolerated.

Progestogen-only therapies work by inhibiting the development of follicles in the ovaries, which prevents ovulation.  They decrease the pulse frequency of some hormones which govern the female reproductive cycle including gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) which is released by the hypothalamus and in turn decreases the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), both of which are produced by the anterior pituitary gland.  Low levels of FSH inhibit the development of the follicle which prevents estradiol (oestrogen) levels increasing, which, in combination with progestogen negative feedback, prevents the LH surge which triggers ovulation.  Progestogen-only therapies also make the cervical mucus inhospitable to sperm, preventing their penetration and cause the endometrium to atrophy, becoming thin.

I am 13, going on 14 years old. My period started like usual 2 days before Christmas. It hasnt stopped!! I have had my period for over Month now and I do not know what to do!!
I don’t have that herb tea ingredients, I need more suggestions!

    • My PCOS Info says:

Sarah, This could be very serious. Losing blood for such a long period of time is not normal and will quickly deplete your haemoglobin – the part of blood which carries oxygen around your body to each cell. If you lose too much blood you will feel weak, have no energy and maybe even pass out. Looking around the internet for ‘suggestions’ can be very dangerous when it is about something this serious.

The first thing you need to do, is to tell your mother or father or guardian or another adult whom you trust what is happening. The second thing you need to do is to go and see a doctor so that you can find out why this is happening. I know you probably don’t want to do either of these things, that you might be embarrassed about it and worried, but it’s very important that you look after yourself and your health and that you don’t wait until this develops into an emergency.

I’m sorry I couldn’t provide you with a quick and easy solution for this. I wish I could. I hope you find a wonderful doctor who can find out what is happening and help you fix it, and that it’s a lot easier than you expect.

      Best wishes,

      Anne

    • My PCOS Info says:

      Rena,

I’m so sorry to hear about your predicament. It is truly awful that you are not getting the help that you need. Clearly, you need to see a doctor and get the bleeding stopped, one way or another. You might need to pay for it out of your own pocket somehow. You can’t allow yourself to keep bleeding; we have a finite supply of the red stuff and as you know running out of it is incompatible with life. I am not overly familiar with the healthcare system in the US (where it sounds like you are from), but a consultation with a GP to obtain a prescription for something which will stop the bleeding in the short term (progesterone perhaps) and a referral to a reproductive endocrinologist should not cost very much.

If you have lost so much blood, you may need a blood transfusion to restore your haemoglobin levels quickly. An iron supplement is certainly recommended as it will help your body to rebuild its iron and haemoglobin stores more quickly, which will help with the fatigue.

In the short-term, options like ibuprofen or progesterone should slow or stop the bleeding. The oral contraceptive pill, in women with PCOS preferably the mini-pill, can help to artificially regulate your cycle for a while, whilst you and your doctor figure out what to do about it long-term.

Long-term, you need to either regulate your hormones (easier said than done in women with PCOS) so that your cycle behaves as it ought, or consider having a hysterectomy or removal or your uterus. This is a very drastic option and only suitable for those women who are finished having, or do not wish to have, children. It also does nothing to address the underlying problems which have caused the hormonal dysregulation and thus heavy and unrelenting periods in the first place.

In women with PCOS, the underlying cause for the majority is insulin resistance, caused by a functional deficiency in d-chiro inositol or DCI. It forms part of a molecule called DCI-IPG which is responsible for turning glucose inside the cells into ATP which is what the cells use for energy. When that system fails, it causes all sorts of problems in your biochemistry, “downstream”. One of these problems is elevated insulin levels, which in turn cause the theca cells in the ovaries to produce too much testosterone. If you address the root cause – the DCI deficiency – all of the problems downstream should go away.

There is more information on DCI here: http://mypcos.info/1/treatments/natural/dci/

And you can buy it from here: http://mypcos.info/1/treatments/dci/

I wish I could help you more Rena, but you really do need to see a doctor somehow. It’s very important, even if you have to pay for it out of your own pocket or borrow money to do so.

Good luck and please let me know how you get on.

I had bleeding everyday for about 10 months. I had no insurance and could not afford to go to the doctor. I went to planned parenthood and got on birth control that was progesterone only and it made the bleeding stop. I can’t say this will work for everyone, but it did for me. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 2 months before the bleeding started. I went from not having a period for 4 years to bleeding so heavy I thought I was going to bleed to death. Now I haven’t had heavy bleeding in a year and have a period last for a day or two and it’s super light.

    • Christy says:

I would say find a medical clinic like mayo clinic or go to ER because it is against the law for them to refuse service to you unless you are a child..in which case you have to have a parent.

    • Nesha says:

Hey I’m dealing with the same I have no insurance etc. So what did you finally do to get help

  4. Shaniqua Nesby says:

I am 21 and I have two kids one 4 yrs old the other is 6 months and since I had my daughter I been on my period for 6 months and none of the doctors can find anything wrong and I know there is what should I do.

    • My PCOS Info says:

I’m sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble finding out what is wrong and fixing it.

The first thing that comes to mind is a small bit of placenta being still attached to the uterine wall, or some kind of damage (a cut or bruising) to the uterine wall or endometrium during the birth that is still healing. Have you had an ultrasound to check for this sort of thing?

Another likely option is uterine atony, or in other words a uterus that has become flaccid and stretched due to the stress and trauma to it of pregnancy and childbirth and is not currently capable of contracting properly, which is what puts pressure on the blood vessels and stops the bleeding.

Yet another possibility would be a coagulation defect or the inability of your blood to clot properly, though this would likely have become apparent with the birth of your first child. Sometimes it is possible for the uterus to be inverted after the delivery of a child and this can also cause bleeding, however, it should have been easily apparent if your doctor did an internal examination.

Please persevere with seeking medical treatment. You do need to get to the bottom of this, as I’m sure you know. Your Dr may be able to prescribe some progesterone to stop the bleeding in the meantime, if you are losing too much blood.

      Good luck!

    Hi!
I have prolonged periods since menarche (10-12 days). They are of normal flow, not too heavy. Since they are prolonged, I can’t really tell if the total amount of blood loss is too much. The doctors I visit don’t want to answer questions. They only push me into pills and want me out of the room.

I’m trying lifestyle approach, on ayurvedic meds now and will soon start PCOS Insulite. Could you tell what kind of issues in hormones do prolonged periods indicate? as in hirsutism points to elavated androgens….

    • My PCOS Info says:

      Hi,

High levels of oestrogen can cause the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) to build up too thickly, so that periods are either heavier, longer or both in order to shed the excess endometrial tissue.

If you don’t ovulate, you won’t produce progesterone (in a significant amount) and it is this (or rather the precipitous drop in progesterone levels after they have been raised for a week) which triggers a period. If this doesn’t happen, the uterine lining keeps building up, which can cause a period to be heavier or more prolonged when it does occur.

Are you periods regular? Do you know whether you ovulate or not? I.e. do you chart your basal body temperature or have you had your progesterone levels measured in the second half of your cycle, a week or ten days before a period is expected?

Another possibility is a clotting disorder. Have you had blood tests to investigate this?

Fibroids should be ruled out, though they usually cause heavy bleeding rather than prolonged menses.

I hope this information is helpful to you and good luck with your new approach to treating them.

If you have PCOS, you might like to look into d-chiro inositol

It helps to resolve the symptoms of PCOS (due to d-chiro inositol deficiency) in 86% of women with PCOS.

      Kind regards,

      Anne

I took contraceptive injection and now I have been bleeding for more than a month now but its just the drops not flowing blood.is it normal or do I need to go and see a doctor.

    • My PCOS Info says:

It can take a little while for the contraceptive injections (Depo-Provera etc) to take proper effect. If the spotting hasn’t stopped by the time you have your 2nd injection in 3 months’ time, discuss it with your doctor.

  7. Yanira Aguilar says:

Hello, I was diagnosed 2 years ago with PCOS. I had an ablation because my bleeding would not stop when I was on my period. I would go for 2 or 3 months of no bleeding, then when it came it was for almost 1 or 2 months long with large blood clots. Its been almost 2 years and My bleeding returned and I’m having the same symtoms. Should I go back for another ablation. After my ablation I stopped all my medication which was Progesterone and Metformin. Should I just go back on that instead of getting another ablation?

    • My PCOS Info says:

Yanira, the heavy, intermittent bleeding you describe is only a symptom of PCOS. Having another ablation will help for a little while, but it won’t do anything to help the other symptoms of PCOS or to bring your hormones back into order.

I suggest that you look into d-chiro inositol. A study last year recommended that d-chiro inositol and myo-inositol be the first line of treatment for women with PCOS as it addresses the cause of PCOS and the hormonal dysregulation that occurs rather than just masking the symptoms. I take it myself and have found it to be the only thing that consistently keeps my symptoms in check.

You can purchase both through My PCOS Info

If you feel that progesterone and metformin worked well for you and you tolerated them without too many side-effects, than that may also be another option.

I am 13, and have been since September. I have had my period for two weeks now. I told my mom, and she is taking me to the doctor’s tomorrow. I’m scared, and don’t know how to act. I’m pretty much going insane because I already know there’s something wrong with me. Everytime I go to the bathroom, large clots come out. I don’t know what to do about that, but my mom just said to keep wearing a pad. I have gotten dizzy, and fallen over in school along with unbearable headaches. I have gone through this enough to the point of where I think I might just go completely bonkers.

  9. Nikki says:

    Hello!
I have been bleeding for over 21 days. This is a first time for me. This happens to run in my family and all of them used Birth Control to make them regular. I went to the GYN on Friday and she put me on Birth Control. I had to take 3 for 3 days, 2 for 2 days then 1 everyday after. The first day I vomited 3 times. The second day I couldn’t even make it to my third pill because I was vomiting so much. On Sunday I had to go to the ER because I kept throwing up. I was so sick I was even thinking about suicide because of the pain. I’m so scared to take anymore pills. I go back to see my GYN later this week and I want to know how to bring up that I don’t want to take pills and go a natural way. I’m scared she will just dismiss it and try to make me take pills again. I will try some of your ways after my stomach gets better.

    • Hannah Blessing says:

Hi! I just want to let you know that what you are describing, with the throwing up uncontrollably after taking pills, that is called a drug allergy. DO NOT ever take that drug again! And always, whenever you go to a doctor and you have to fill out those forms, tell them that you are allergic to this. Write it down, and carry the paper with you when you go. It is very dangerous to take something that you are allergic to, because usually your adverse effects get worse. You could die. Let your pharmacist where you got this prescription filled know as soon as possible what happened so that they can put this into their computer.

  10. Nandita says:

    Hi,
Usually my period cycle is 5 days + 2-3 days of spotting but since the past 2 months my periods continued for 8 days with 2-3 days of spotting. This month however, they started on the 26th November and still continue. Today I had a breakup in October but I’m sure that cannot affect me till this extent. I’m a little worried since this is very unusual and I’m away from home. Please tell me what to do since I’m very confused.

P.S. I’m 19 and haven’t had any sort of intercourse.

    • My PCOS Info says:

It is entirely possible that the stress of your recent breakup is affecting your hormones. It’s a very delicate balance and easily disrupted. The best thing to do is to go and see a doctor and get an ultrasound and some blood tests to help you find out what the problem is. It’s important to find out why your period has gone on for so long, before you think about how to stop it. Best of luck!

  11. N/A says:

I am 15 and i have horible problems with my period. Ussually its really light and not a problem but for some reason my period is heavy this time. It started on November 30th and is still going on. I refuse to go to a doctor or gynaecologist. Is there a way i can stop it with out going to the doctor?

    • My PCOS Info says:

It is important to find out why your period is so heavy this time, particularly if this is not normal for you. If there is something wrong, you need to know what that is, rather than try and cover up the symptoms yourself. Have you told your mother what is going on? I understand that you don’t want to see a doctor, however, your health is more important that any embarrassment that you might feel. Doctors are professionals, they are there to help you in times like this, and they have seen it all before. I strongly recommend that you summon your courage and see one, even if you don’t want to, find out what is going on and then think about what to do. The first thing is an ultrasound. Best of luck with everything.

Iv had bleeding for 3 months now! just started the POP on it for 2 weeks but no relief, so will go to the Dr again and see about supplementing it with natural progesterone cream. i am drinking alot and eating alot together with iron and lots of multi vits, but just sick of it now at this stage. For me I missed a month and then another month and now I thnk 2 months later my body is making up for it. Stres was the factor for me that caused me missing a period. Blood tests, 3D scans all showed everything is normal so that is a relief. Wish there was more i could do. Heard about some procedure that burns the lining of the womb but that is severe. Fed up.

  13. Adwoa says:

To stop long bleeding, dilute 1/2 piece of lemon in water , drink 2 X daily. Drink plenty of water afterwards. During that period, stop taking sugar and sugary foods.Bleeding should stop between 2- 3 days.if not see a doctor. You may be prescribed provera or other orthodox drugs.

  14. Ashley says:

I know this is an old post! hopefully someone responda! I am a little worried. My period hasn’t fully stopped since my last one, and then all the sudden a week ago its been the heaviest it has ever been in my life. It won’t stop. Literally through a tampon pantyliner and my pants in 1 hour! It’s been this bad for a week straight. I Have PCOS and I’m not sure if I should be going to my doctor ASAP about this. I’m only 20 years old and I can’t think straight I’ve lost so much blood, I am very angry and short tempered. Should be seeing a doctor? This has never happened before.

    • My PCOS Info says:

Ashley, if you have been losing that much blood for that long, you definitely need to see a doctor and preferably go to an emergency room as soon as possible. They will be able to give you something to make the bleeding stop, but it may take a few days to work and they can monitor you to make sure you are safe until then. You will need to have some blood tests to see if you have enough blood left! You might need a top up 🙂

Once this acute episode is over, you should see a gynaecologist, or reproductive endocrinologist to try and ascertain what happened and how to prevent it from happening again in the future.

There are a few things that could be causing this, the most likely are: a miscarriage, a fibroid, or super-heavy bleeding courtesy of PCOS hormonal disturbance. The latter is more likely if you don’t have regular periods and the endometrium has built up to an abnormally thick level.

Best of luck. Please write back and let me know how you got on.

    • My PCOS Info says:

Hi Ashley, You should definitely see your doctor or go to a hospital so that this can be investigated. Although irregular bleeding is common in PCOS, it’s important to get it under control and not let it become normal for you.

When you have this acute episode under control, you should look into some long-term management options so that it doesn’t happen again.

I think that d-chiro inositol is one of the best options available for PCOS. A study last year recommended that DCI and myoinositol be the first line of treatment for women with PCOS.

Good luck and remember: this is your health, it is important, don’t take rubbish from ill-informed health care professionals should you come across them. Demand that they give you the care and accurate information that you deserve.

i am the mother of 7 yrs old son and i m 34 now.normally i have regular periods but it was painful and heavy.but i have bleeding within 15 days after my regular period and it continues for 10 days.i consulted a doctor and took ultrasound scan.in that she saw a clear cyst filled with fluid in my right ovary and bulky uterus.my doctor prescribed me to take birthcontrol pills but i confused to take due to its side effecs.but still i have bleeding.plz help me with ur reply.

    • My PCOS Info says:

      Hi Suji,

I recommend that you see another doctor. I don’t think that birth control pills are an appropriate solution for an undiagnosed problem. An ovarian cyst is a fairly common occurrence and often resolves by itself. It will not cause the kind of bleeding you describe, so this is not the cause of your problem. The bulky uterus needs further investigation and is likely related to your bleeding.

Good luck, please write back and let us know how you go.

  16. Princess says:

Hello I hope you are still answering questions. I have been suffering from pcos for over three years now. It started with me going to the emergency room because I would bleed for months heavily. The doctors gave me ultrasounds and diagnosed me with fibroid’s. They decided that birth control pills would be the best thing. So I took them for a while and decided I know longer wanted a band aide. They decided the next best thing would be fibroid removal surgery. I agreed on the surgery. On the day of the surgery I had been bleeding heavily for almost two months. When I awoke from surgery I was told I had an d&c because of the bleeding and a blood transfusion. The doctor had also discovered that when he cut me open to remove the fibroid’s that there were none to be found because he had misdiagnosed me and had discovered that I had Pcos. He informed me that there was nothing he could do and did not give me any other options. Since then I am still bleeding heavy and long and doctors only offer me birth control pills. They refuse to send me to a specialist. They do not check my hormone levels they basically tell me there’s no hope. I have also went back to emergency room where they suggest that I be put on metformin; but my obgyn refuses that too. I am seeking help please I don’t know what else to do. I am sad and depressed feeling like something’s wrong with me and there is no help out there.

    • My PCOS Info says:

I’m so sorry to hear you aren’t getting the medical care you deserve and need. Unfortunately, for a condition which affects between 10 and 25% of the female population, PCOS gets very little attention from a public health perspective and many clinicians are woefully undereducated about PCOS.

A study last year recommended that d-chiro inositol and myo-inositol be the first line of treatment for women with PCOS. I take it myself and have found it to be the only thing that consistently keeps my symptoms in check.

You can purchase both through My PCOS Info

Metformin is only appropriate for PCOS under certain circumstances. Perhaps you don’t fall within those guidelines? You can learn more about it here: PCOS and metformin and if you think you are a woman for whom metformin is appropriate, and you want to take it, persevere with another doctor until you find one who will prescribe it.

A nine-day period sounds a little long, but not completely abnormal. If you are concerned, however, you can either try some of the options above, or see your doctor to try and stop it. Good luck!

  18. Eugenie says:

In 2007, I had been diagnosed not only with Bipolar Disorder, but also with PCOS. Since then, I have been bleeding for 5, sometimes up to 8 months straight. My gynae has always been able to treat it with Provera. Since starting bleeding again (Heavy with huge clots…) in middle January, I’ve been to 2 doctors. I started a 5 day course on Provera; no good. Then, about a week ago, I went to the other doctor, who again prescribed Provera, as well as Ibuprofen, antibiotics and a contraceptive. NO LUCK! i am tearful all the time, thinking of suicide and I am not coping at all. The medication makes me feel nauseous all the time, I have gastric acid problems. Is there any homeopathic remedy I can take? I live in South Africa, so most of the herbs you mentioned, doesn’t grow here in our dry climate. Will a hysterectomy help and take it away forever? I am desperate. My husband had a vasectomy years ago – we have two boys, so I don’t want any more children.

    • My PCOS Info says:

      Eugenie,

I’m so sorry to hear you are having such terrible difficulties. A hysterectomy may be a valid option for stopping the bleeding if nothing else will, however, it will not address the cause of the PCOS, nor the hormonal disturbances that accompany it.

A study last year recommended that d-chiro inositol and myo-inositol be the first line of treatment for women with PCOS, as it addresses the cause of the problem – insulin resistance and helps to prevent other complications from developing.

You can buy DCI and MI from My PCOS Info. Perhaps it will help. Interestingly, myo-inositol it also quite helpful for some aspects of bipolar, though in much larger doses.

I hope you are able to resolve the bleeding and find some options to help you enjoy life again, for yourself and your family.

      All the best, Anne

Im 19, had my mirena for less than a year, got my period regularly scheduled every month . One month I didnt get anything, no discharge no nothing, I became scared so my boyfriend and I decided to get it removed . Its been over 2 weeks of bleeding , at first it started subsiding , I thought it was over . My boyfriend and I had intercourse & I started gushing blood ever since … I go thru pads like paper .. Its been 3 days with this horrific bleeding . Idk what to do

    • My PCOS Info says:

You need to go to an emergency room to have the bleeding addressed immediately before it endangers your health and then see a gynaecologist to discuss longer term resolution.

      Good luck.

  20. Stella says:

I am on Nora-BE, a progesterone only birth control pill. I have a hard time dealing with estrogen because it gives me horrible migraines. Because there is no estrogen, I should not be having a period. I have been on it for about 6 months, and have had about 3 extremely long periods, lasting about 3 weeks every time. It’s extremely tiresome, and I have to take iron supplements to keep from becoming anemic. Is this happening just because my body goes for 2-3 months without menstration, and slowly builds up? The Internet is no help.

    • My PCOS Info says:

      Hi Stella,

If you are taking a progestogen-only birth control pill, that should inhibit the growth of the endometrium, stopping it from building up to a level where it needs to shed. In short – you should NOT bleed using progestogen only pills. You may require a higher dose, if you are only on one of the mini-pill versions, or perhaps they just don’t agree with you.

The reaction you are experiencing sounds very abnormal to me and I would recommend that you see a gynaecologist, have an ultrasound to rule out any structural abnormality and to discuss other options.

And the internet knows everything … if you know where to look 🙂

      Good luck.

    • My PCOS Info says:

Annette, you are experiencing the symptoms of blood loss – anaemia and hypovolaemia. Your blood does not have enough oxygen carrying ability and there is not enough of it in your veins. It is important that you get medical attention straight away. Your best option is to go to the hospital where they can give you IV fluids, blood replacers or blood, depending upon how bad it is, and then try and get to the bottom of why your period has gone on for so long. If that is not possible for you, then see your doctor today. Blood loss can be very dangerous and your health and wellbeing are worth far more than the inconvenience and time you will lose in the waiting room. In the meantime, drink lots of water and get someone to drive you to the doctor or hospital. Don’t endanger yourself or others by driving yourself while you are this ill. Good luck!

They are accompanied by headaches. Plz help

  26. Amanda says:

I have PCOS and while heavy menstrual bleeding is normal for me when I used to rarely get normal periods, it’s been super heavy lately. I just started on birth control about a week ago to control my period and well now I have a heavy flow that’s lates more than a week. Is this normal? Tried calling dr but waiting on a call back.

    • My PCOS Info says:

      Hi Amanda,

With PCOS, there is very little that is ‘normal’. With menstrual blood loss, we tend to judge ‘normal’ by what is ‘usual’ for us. If what you are experiencing now is different than usual, then it is not normal for you and should be taken seriously.

Female reproductive hormones interact in very complex ways which are not completely understood. There is also a lot of variance in the composition of the various oral contraceptive pills that are available. Each will have a different effect, so it’s hard to tell what should or should not be happening in your individual case.

I hope your doctor calls you back soon. Heavy bleeding for more than a week is not ‘normal’. Persistent, heavy blood loss can lead to anaemia or hypovolaemic shock and must not be taken lightly. If you are at all concerned, you should go to an emergency department.

      Good luck!

Please help me! I’m really worried. I am a 12 year old girl (13 in 8 days) and I have had my period for 2 weeks now. Normally they are just 5-7 days and I’m really worried. I have had my period for about a year and a half and this has never happened. I tried googleing questions but they scared me even more. I don’t know what to do. I’m terrified but I will not, no matter how bad go to the hospital. It’s gross and embarassing.

    • My PCOS Info says:

      Aniqah,

I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but nobody is going to be able to help you over the internet. Google is absolutely no replacement for a good doctor. You need to tell your mother or guardian what is going on and at the very least see your GP and get a referral to a gynaecologist. It is not gross, nor should it be embarrassing. Menstruation is something that every woman goes through each month, and if not, there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Without menstruation, there would never be any more babies brought into the world. It may be a little messy and inconvenient, but it’s worth it, in the end. The female body is an incredible and complex thing which is capable of the most incredible things, but occasionally it doesn’t work exactly as it should and it is very important for you to find out why. If your period continues to go on, you may have to choose between being embarrassed but alive, or letting your embarrassment win and endangering your life. I strongly encourage you to be brave and mature about this and overcome your embarrassment and tell your mother and get her to help you find out what is going on. It is normal for there to be some variation in the duration and flow of menstrual periods when you are just beginning to have them, as your body gets used to everything and your hormones find a rhythm, so there may not be anything to worry about at all, but you do need to find out, before you lose too much blood. Good luck!

I’ve been bleeding for about 3 1/2 to 4 weeks. I was diagnosed with PCOS years ago. I hadn’t had the money to get my medicine for a few months but I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago and got my prescriptions (500mg Metformin twice daily and BC). The doctor gave me a new brand of BC because its cheaper. I’ve been taking my meds but the bleeding has actually gotten worse. It’s heavier than my periods ever are! Should I see if finishing the pack of BC fixes it or should I call and ask for my old BC prescription?

    • My PCOS Info says:

If you have been off your PCOS medication for a while, it is likely that your menstrual cycle became irregular. If you have missed several periods, then your endometrium will have built up to a thicker than usual level and this could be the reason why you are bleeding more than usual. If this is not the case, and your menstrual cycle remained normal and regular whilst you were off your medication, then the heavy bleeding is likely due to the change in OCPs and you should speak to your doctor about switching to something else. Good luck!

I take metphormine (large pills) and birth control.
Me and my husband still continue our sex life even through the grossness of blood…but its still kind of annoying! Please I’m wondering if i should see a doctor asap or just look for something to stop it.

Women’s periods can differ a little from time to time. Most likely it is nothing to worry about, however if it does not resolve by the end of your next period you should go and see your doctor.

    • My PCOS Info says:

If there is any chance you may be pregnant, you should do a pregnancy test. It is reasonably common for women to have some light bleeding at the time that they would have expected their menses when they are in the early stages of pregnancy.

    • My PCOS Info says:

The high levels of synthetic hormones contained in oral contraceptives can affect fertility for a while after coming off them but most women eventually recover a normal fertility cycle eventually. It is possible for fertility to be negatively impacted by the trauma of a surgical abortion, but this is much less common with improved modern surgical techniques. It is possible that the irregularity of your periods after having unprotected sex may be due to stress rather than any direct effect from sperm.

With respect to your current period, firstly take a pregnancy test to rule this out. Secondly, over the counter drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium may help to lessen heavy blood flow in the short-term. Thirdly, if your problems persist, you must see your doctor to investigate the cause so you can resolve it. Good luck!

I am 30 yr old and have a 2 yr old son born out of C-section in Dec’11. My cycles have been perfect (though little longer than what others get) since its inception, which was around age of 13.
I have never missed a period or had irregular ones. But only mistake I did was taking an emergency contraceptive pill in October’13.
The Period after that started on 9th Nov , there was only spotting for 4 days and them Medium flow thereafter till now.
I have taken Gyane-CVP for 2 days and then Amentone (Tranexamic Acid + Mefenamic Acid) dor 2 days now, but there has been no difference in the flow accept that they have only increased.
    Ultrasound shows no abnormality.
I am confused and depressed ‘cz of the the failed medical system.

I am losing weight, i need to, but that is not the issue. i am so tired, i cannot concentrate, i drink any fluids i can get my hands on to stay hydrated. I just want to curl up and cry, i dont know what to do anymore. my menses started at age 11. never been normal save for 3 months at the start, then nothing for 5 years, 16 day period, then toucha nd go. the only birth control pill that worked was the triphasic setup, and i would get severe migraines, the rare cluster kind, with severe neurological symptoms, it was like i was drunk or having a stroke. it was insane. metformin makes me ill, and exacerbates my IBS. i cant win.

I just read your article, and to be honest I’m quite desperate for an answer or guidance. I have been having a problem for about a year. I keep bleeding, but It won’t stop. It started in February of this year I went to multiple doctors all did scans saying giving me NO information. One doc says it “might” be a cyst, another said they found weird tissue doing a DNC to get info (but she just told me it was probably a miscarriage, in which I told her wasn’t the case.) Went to another doctor who did all the scans, ultra sounds, pap smears, etc. NO answers. At this point I’m pretty depressed, and right now I have had a period for about 3 months. It goes away for like 2 days (it’s extremely light, or is only completely missing for like a few hours), and comes back heavy. It is painful, I am always tired, and I emotionally am not doing so well. Do you have any idea of what I can look into? Or how to just stop the bleeding. I’ve even lost weight to become healthier, I’m taking vitamins. Birth control does not help… I am literally at the end of my rope.

I had an internal scan and they said that everything looked fine but there was a lot of blood there. Then a few days later i didnt bleed for a few weeks and then it started again. Ive been to the doctors loads of times bout this and they say there isnt really anything they can do. They put me on a different pill and that didnt work, plus i got give the pills that stop your periods and they didnt work either. I went to a walk in centre and they gave me some other tablets to stop me bleeding and they didnt work. Im starting to feel really down about this and i feel all alone and dont know where 2 turn. I have the same problem, I’m 14 and mine stared when I was 12. It was normal for about 10 months, and then it wouldn’t stop. I passed out a few times, and eventually my parents took me to the hospital. I was put on the birth control pill without any breaks so that my blood supply could be replenished. I stopped taking it last September, and my period didn’t come at all till now. And, it’s now been on for 3 weeks. The pills really don’t help to regulate it. Every website talks about shepherd’s purse, yarrow, raspberry, lot’s of water. I’m trying these medications from a naturopath. They’re supposed to help regulate it in the long term, but I really don’t know about short term fixes. I’ve heard that drinking 3/4 cup pineapple and 1/4 cup lemon juice together makes it stop. Also, green beans and vitamin C, but I really don’t know.

Greetings. I’m soon to be 46 years old and having major difficulties. All my life I have had extremely heavy periods (using the most absorbent tampons and pads)… but the doctors always said this was “normal” and never did anything about them when I inquired about this. My cycle was also very irregular and could last anywhere between 8 – 10 days long.

During the first week of January (of this year) I had a mild stroke (a TIA), though no one seems to know what was the cause. All seems well now (no lingering symptoms, thankfully). However, due to this my doctor has decided to prescribe a bunch of pills… which normally I wouldn’t need, but she insists I take. The pills she prescribed are for lowering my cholesterol (which is not high, but she insists it should be a little lower), an aspirin a day, and something to help keep my blood pressure low (which is again wasn’t normally high, but she insists it should be lower because of the stroke symptom). She also said I should take an iron supplement daily since I am severely anemic (my hemoglobin was in the low 60’s).

I started taking all these pills a few days after my period started. After 12 days of heavy bleeding with no sign of slowing like I usually get, I then spoke to my doctor about this. She prescribed a progesterone pill which she said would slow the bleeding. After 3 weeks I was sent to the hospital and was given a blood transfusion because my hemoglobin was too low. So far this pill hasn’t helped at all… the cycle has not slowed at all. I’ve also had many tests done, such as thyroid & other bloodwork, an MRI, an ultrasound of the uterus, and even had a biopsy of the uterus (which made me bleed even more). I have no idea what the results of any of these tests are as my doctor will not tell me.

I’ve been bleeding extremely heavy (meaning I use a Depends bladder pantie along with either a tampon or a large Diva Cup… changing the latter almost every 1 to 2 hours and the panty 2-3 times per day) for almost 2 months straight now. I have been to my doctor several times since but so far all her methods of reducing my bleeding have not helped at all. I’m worried as the latest method she want’s me to do next is making me nervous.

She has now said that I should get a merina IUD inserted as this would release hormones to thin the lining of my uterus and eventually stop my bleeding. However, everything I’ve read about these devices (including the leaflet that comes with the merina itself) say to NOT use this if one has a history of strokes, if one has a history of blood clots – which I get very large ones every cycle and have been since I first started my periods) – or if bleeding from the vagina for unknown reasons. I really do not want to use this device (I’m actually getting anxiety attacks over this), but have no other idea what to do, other than have the major surgery to remove the uterus.

I was hoping you might have some other suggestions I could try before going that far.

      Krynne,

I’m so sorry to hear that you are going through such a difficult time. Your history sounds like you may have PCOS, but you don’t say this. Were you diagnosed with PCOS? If you do have PCOS, ultimately treatment to improve your insulin sensitivity, such as metformin or d-chiro inositol, may help in the long-term, however, neither is likely to provide the fast response you require to stop that bleeding now.

It sounds like you would be well served by getting a 2nd or even 3rd opinion about your medical treatment at the moment. You should certainly be given access to your test results and your doctor should take the time to explain each one to you. The symptoms you have experienced this year are very serious and you certainly have every justification to ensure that you get the best medical treatment possible. Your health and wellbeing rely upon it, after all.

The degree of bleeding you describe is certainly not sustainable and something must be done. Can you get a referral to a consultant gynaecologist or reproductive endocrinologist? I would certainly be extremely averse to having a Mirena inserted if I had your recent history.

what drugs can stop it immeditely

    • My PCOS Info says:

There are no drugs that can stop it immediately. The best currently available treatment options are described above. Please see your doctor or attend a hospital if you feel that the bleeding has been going on for too long.

Hi, I am 24 years old and I think I have the biggest problem ever. When I am having sex I always menstruate, even if I was not on my periods at the moment. This makes me very worried because my boyfriend finds it so strange and he’s not comfortable about this neither do I, please help. What can I take?

    • My PCOS Info says:

If you have PCOS and do not menstruate regularly, it is possible that the increased movement and blood flow in your uterus triggers the thickened endometrial tissue to slough off during sexual intercourse.

The best course of action is to get a referral to a gynaecologist and find out what is going on. If you have PCOS, a reproductive endocrinologist is probably more appropriate.

      Good luck!

Hi, I am 18. I first got my period when I was 12 and they still aren’t regular. Normally my periods are about 3 to 5 days and they aren’t really heavy. Pretty much they are perfect except here and there. Well besides not having one every month that is.
This month I started on the 13th and I am still on my period. It has been about 14 days! I’m getting worried. It seems like it is slowly getting heavier each day. Any suggestions? Anything you think would help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Good Day,

I have been diagnosed with PCOS a few months ago. I had my first period when I was 11 and always used to have heavy bleeding. When I was around 15 I was on Birth Control to help and it did for a while. I been on them for 12 years until December 2012 I was hospitalized for DVT and PE. So now I cannot take any hormonal pills. Now that I’m off them I have having terrible and inconsistent periods. I would skip a month then bleed alot the next. I tried a progesterone micro pill but it didn’t work, so I have to juggle between Provera pills and an “acetate” (can’t remember the name). Right now I’m on day 14 of my period and it’s mentally depressing. Sometimes the Provera don’t work but I have to be careful of the hormones. I will be trying Mirena next month but I am hesitant. No other doctors want to treat my case since it is so different. I even want to ask for just a hysterectomy to see if I will have relief…but I never had kids yet….I’m at a loss.

Hi Mia, As your menstrual blood gets older, towards the end of your period, it turns a darker colour, just like when you cut yourself. The iron in the haemoglobin oxidized, like when a piece of iron machinery rusts. You can just keep wearing a panty liner until the bleeding stops completely, which should only be a day or two. All the best.

Particularly when you are young and your menstrual cycle is just getting established, it can be irregular. Sometimes in the first few years it may be unpredictable with longer gaps between periods or a period that stops and starts a bit as you have described. This is quite common and perfectly normal, however if you are at all concerned, tell your mother, a school nurse or other trusted adult and ask to discuss it with your gp or gynecologist. You can also borrow books on women’s biology from the library which can help you to understand better the workings of a female body and what to expect. Good luck, if you have any more questions please let me know. I’m here to help.

  80. Senta says:

Hello all. I am 28 years old, and have had issues every since the introduction to womanhood. When I was 13 I had my period for over 3 months, and not knowing any better, I didnt mention this to anyone. Finally, one of my sisters asked me and I told her. That is when I took my first trip to the Doctors in regards to my period. They checked me out, and put me on birth control (for the 1st time). This seemed to help, at least for a while. I took the pill for 3 months and after I went off the pill, things were ok for a few months, then the issue arose again. Periods lasting for what seemed like for ever, and large clots. I was put on birth controll 2 more times, with the same results (fixed for a few months then back to bleeding to death) . As i got older i realized that I had gotten no real answers from my care providers, and they continue to give me “Band aids” instead of fixing the issue. I have seen more doctors than I can even remember, and all with the same result, I leave with tears in my eyes and no answers. It got so bad that everytime my husban and I would have sex it would start my period, and last for months!!! I finally found an amazing acupuncturist who sent me to the doctor to request specific tests. While I was there the Doctor was rude! I explained that my mother had the same issue with long lasting periods, heavy clotting, and, at times, it is so bad that I could not even stand because i would bleed through a tampon and pad! He replied, “well, though you might think you are, you arent going to bleed to death”. He made some other rude comments to me to the point I wanted to jump off the table and kick his butt! He kept insisting that I take birth control, even after telling him nonstop that I did not want the pill, I wanted answers, not another band aid! He told me to take the pills until I was ready to have kids, have my kids, then come back to see him and he would remove all of my lady internals for me! I was so shocked at the way he was treating me that I was speachless! I ended up leaving with tears and a percription for birth control (which i did not fill!). I got a second opion and the new doctor saw an abnormality on my cervix with her naked eye, something the jerk doctor seemed to have over looked!! and when she did my pap it caused my cervix to bleed, i had a few procedures done (Where they found nothing wrong we me. No PCOS…I was told that PCOS doesnt even exist.no cancer, nothing with the blood work, other than ALL of my levels were slightly low .NOTHING!.), but this seemed to calm everything. Within a few months I got pregnet, then I lost the baby, and things went back to bad! I will have a few normal months, then skip a month or 2, then bleed forever! I am now on my 3rd week of bleeding, with heavy clotting, and I am so tired of all of it! I have read so many women with the same issue, but none of us can find answers! It seems to me that our “Care providers” dont really care at all. I am going to try to remove all processed, hormone fille crap from my diet and see if this helps. But, we need answers! I am on a quest now to find natural remidies to help all other women that are suffering from this curse! When I find answers I will post them!

Im not in severe pain but i am pretty uncomfortable on my left side. I had my tubes tied 8 year agoso im pretty sure im not pregnant. My husband wants me to go to the er but i feel like they arent going to do anything and we dnt have insurance so i dnt know what to do.

    • My PCOS Info says:

Hi Carolyn, I’m sorry to hear that. In the short term, ibuprofen may reduce the bleeding, but it sounds like something you should have checked out. Believe it or not, there have been rare cases of pregnancy, usually ectopic, after tubal ligation. Another option might be a ruptured ovarian cyst. Either way, better safe than sorry. Can you see a GP and get an ultrasound and pregnancy test? That might be more economical. Good luck.

I’m 20, I have PCOS and started taking birth control since I was about 16. I had a blood clot two years ago and now no doctor will put me back on it so I’ve been relying on insulin pills. After I started having pain in my side and dark urine I stopped taking the pills and the side affects cleared up. But I’m now on day 70 of my period (my record being 74 days while adjusting to birth control) and I constantly cramp, I use 2 boxes of tampons every month and one box of pads, I feel raw and sore “down there”, and I’m incredibly light headed all the time, sometimes Turing my head in one direction to fast gives me a migraine and I feel like I’m going to faint. The fact that it’s the middle of the summer and heat stroke is already an issue as I’m ironically prone to that as well idk what to do. My doctor gave me a prescription for progesterone pills that I can’t start taking till she sets up a date to have the mirena implanted which can’t happen till I stop bleeding… Which won’t happen till I take the pills… Any tips? Please please help!

But this time is unlike any other time I’ve ever seen it. I’ve had my period for 6 weeks!! The amount of blood fluxgates like crazy! I was told that if it didn’t work she would increase the pill but I dont want to develop blood clots or anything weird…. At first the blood was brown/black with clumps and now its straight red with a little clotting. I came on here the other day and even tried the tea… nothing works for me. I have called my doctor back and he says to just give the medicine more time to work. That is easy for him to say he is not the one that has to run to the restroom ever few minutes, or stand to cough or sneeze. or to be in constant pain and feel like you are going to pass out…. I need help… Not sure what more I can do. And I know that I can’t handle any more of this.

Tori write it down and give it to the doctor. It worked for me and I bled out for nearly 3 years with PCOS. I completely understand what you are going through, the pain, the embarassment, and hopelessness. The doctors don’t always have the answers and I know mine didn’t either. My doctor is an awesome lady and even she was at a loss because this didn’t match up right. But we sat down and I ran a theory by her which made perfect sense as to what is going on. We played Dr House on Christmas Eve 2014. The idea here is to give your doctor a direction to go so you can get the help you need.

As for why you are bleeding. It’s rather simple really. You’ll need a blood insulin test done, but I suspect your insulin is very high. Very high insulin causes the ovaries to produce a very high amount of androgen. Androgen is converted to estrogen and when there’s a high amount of estrogen the body has prolonged periods of not menstruating. Except when there’s very high androgen the body can’t convert it all to estrogen. So you end up with free floating androgen. This causes the body to think the estrogen/progesterone is low. When those hormones are low the body menstruates. In this case it just doesn’t stop because insulin is being produced at a high rate which is causing more androgen to be produced. The clots are the developing lining estrogen produces being prematurely passed. That’s why it’s so painful. This is why it’s extremely important to get your insulin under control and fast. It’s why the first thing I put is that list of medication and how to take them. My doctor and I came up with this and we tried it knowing it may not work. I can’t say it’ll work for you or anyone else. But if this gives the doctor a direction to go in for you and it helps then that’s what matters the most.

My PCOS Info, this is being posted to help others out there with this problem. After nearly 3 years of prolonged extremely heavy bleeding, pain, and becoming severely anemic I am now undergoing surgery. I hope these women suffering the same are able to get the help sooner and have relief. Even the opportunity to have children. I also hope that this will help you grow as a site and give you the ability to help many more women with PCOS.

God’s Speed everyone and if you have questions about my theory feel free to ask. Otherwise I wish all of you find relief.

September last year I got the same way of 14 days bleeding. I met a doctor and he gave me some medicines and vitamins and a scan for fibroids. I got that medicines and my periods was stopped. Scan report was also normal. Doctor said to me don’t get too much medicine included hormones, because my hormone volume is too low and not gaining as much. Then my periods come normal for 4 months and it stopped again.
Now I am in the same situation. My period started before 14 days and it was not stopped yet. I haven’t ingredients for made a herbal tea and I won’t meet a doctor again. Past 5 year I met many doctors to get help for my abnormal periods and I fed up with it. Please give me a solution. Thank you.

I hope by now you went and seen a doctor. There are many conditions that can cause that very thing, but the main course of treatment is the same. Please ask to be checked for PCOS and have insulin testing done. It can be either PCOS or insulin resistance. Another thing is to ask if you can start treatment to see if it helps. That’s what I did after 3 years straight of extremely heavy bleeding with clots reaching the size of raquet balls. Very painful to pass. I just went off my pain meds this past month.

I’ve consulted doctors about it even my gynecologist. so I have been on my period nonstop for 5 months now. I chose to switch to the pills hoping if I skip the green ones, it’ll go away. But I doubt it will. how else can I stop this? it’s getting expensive with buying tampons and ruining all my underwear just to have to buy new ones. I’m getting so frustrated, please help.

My period is still happening and about in 2 days I am sapposed to get my next period. I am so tired. I feel like I have lost so much blood what should I do ?

    • My PCOS Info says:

      Hi Sophie,

The best thing to do is to go and see your doctor. It is not good to bleed so heavily and for so long. Your body will not be able to replenish your red blood cells quickly enough which is why you are feelung tured. Your doctor may give you some hormone pills to calm everything down for a little while. When your periods are just getting established, sometimes they can start off too heavy or too light, but usually they become more normal as your body gets used to the hormonal cycle.

      Good luck!

      Anne

But i dont have any pain. During that day (june12-til now) sometimes i have a bleed small amount sometimes not. Please help me any suggestion will help me. Nextweek, i go to doctor.

    • Wolf Hogen says:

Go see a doctor and if you’re in pain with this you need to mention that. Many times birth control will help regulate a period and even out your hormones. The doctor may also have you take iron supplements to help prevent anemia and your body recover. In the mean time here’s a few things you should make a habit of now.

      1. Watch your caffeine intake and avoid it when on your period.

      2. Eat healthy. Fruits and veggies make great snacks.

      3. Exercise. Even walking when on your period will help.

      Wish you the best Sophie.

I’m 53 and had been taking Minastrin (loestrin 24 previously) for several years (7-8) to stop having periods. My doctor recommended I try going off of it as I may be in menopause. After about two months, my period started again. At first it was just a little spotting for a few days, then more of a typical period, so I went back on the Minastrin. It hasn’t helped as my period has continued to fluctuate between spotting and a normal period flow for what is now 3 and a half weeks. Do I stop taking it or continue?

  136. Sai says:

    Hi, This is sai,

I don’t know how to explain my problem. I’m 25 yr old(virgin). My problem started in Oct 2012. I dint get my periods on time. It postponed a week or two, sometimes a month or two also. I was quite worried about my situation. I came to know about Yoga – which is very helpful for irregular periods and started it. By feb 2013, my periods became regular. The whole year i got 11 cycles. The very next yr also fine. Then this year, 2015 April, I got 2 cycles and both lasted for 3 days.

First cycle in April was on 5th (which is 1 week before my cycle)
    second cycle was on 28th
then in May again i got cycle on 7th (and till today i am on my period)

I need to mention some important things about me.
    1. I dint get any pain or discomfort in my periods (not even a single time in my life)
    2. I stopped Yoga and Gym these days.
    3. I am over weighted (height – 5ft, weight – 155 lbs )
    4. Since 11 May, (ie after my cycle on 7th May) i dint need any sanitary pads. There is NO leak at all. But I just see only when i go to loo.

    • Hannah Blessing says:

Sometimes women who do athletics miss their periods. This can be normal for them, but let your doctor know, because you may need a calcium supplement. Women who don’t menstruate have increased calcium needs. It is okay to get two periods in the same month, because the norm is that women get a period every three weeks. Even though it’s called our “monthly,” it’s not. That’s good that you don’t feel pain during your periods! That has to do with a good diet, and from being physically active. Good for you! Keep up the good work, Sai! I would suggest that you continue to write down things about your periods and that you find a good OB/GYN to discuss this stuff with. It can be hard, but they’re the experts!
P.S. It’s okay to workout while you’re on your period. It can help with your symptoms even. I used to just sit around on my period too, but I’ve learned to work out because it lessons my pain. It increases serotonin, which does wonders for your mood. And it eases your muscle cramps by giving the muscles something productive to do, focusing their energy. I would suggest something calming if you want to ease into exercising on your period, like walking, even if it’s just in place while watching a little TV or Netflix. And once you are used to it, you should be able to do anything!

  150. Sarah says:

I’ve had periods for about two weeks and two days…and it just won’t stop! It’s not heavy or anything. Rather, it’s really light. I’ve been experiencing periods this long for around two months now. I don’t eat well or sleep at a regular time. I don’t do any exercise at all. I don’t get any cramps, or headaches, or any side effects rather than just prolonged light bleeding.

At first, I thought this was because of my erratic and sudden change in schedules related to eating and sleeping. But now I’m beginning to get worried.

Is this just a side effect of an unhealthy lifestyle or is it something more serious?

I’m 15 years old and I’ve had my period for around 2 years. For as long as I can remember I have always had VERY long periods with the shortest period lasting 10 days. My period only ever stops for 5 or 6 days an then I get it again usually for up to 30 days but this month the bleeding has not stopped. I talked to my friend who told me she has her
Period all month too but sometimes it is so light she doesn’t need to use any menstruation products ( but I need to use them every day due to heavy bleeding and blood clots which are usually a centimetre in width ) after hearing that my friends period was similar I thought mine was normal but I don’t think it is anymore, could this be just a hormone imbalance? Would birth control help? How can I explain it to a doctor and how do I tell my stepmother?

    • Hannah Blessing says:

It sounds like you and your friend both have iron-deficiency anemia. Please ask your doctor to have the iron level in your blood checked right away! Just tell them exactly what you told us here, and it helps to write it out first, so that you remember. One way to tell your stepmother would be to bring her along to the doctor with you. That way, you can tell them both at the same time. Or you can have a talk with her once you have written out the info you are bringing with you to the doctor, you can use that piece of paper in case you are too nervous to remember things. She will be glad that you confided in her!

hi, I have PCOS, gained weight as well. have been trying for a baby for more than a year but no luck. missed my period for two months with excessive bloating which is fine now.got spotting for few days and stopped and later had my period which would be normal for day three but its been going on for the last three weeks and doesn’t indicate that it will stop. any advise?

    • Hannah Blessing says:

You may need iron supplementation. Check with your doctor to have the iron levels in your blood tested. This is more common than most women are aware of, but it is easily correctable. If you lack iron, your body can’t make enough hemoglobin, which helps your blood to clot. If it can’t clot well, your periods cannot stop. But you can take iron supplements! And when you do, be sure and also take Vitamin C, because it helps it to be absorbed better. Also, take it one hour before a meal, or two hours after for maximum absorbancy. Drinking 8 oz of vegetable or fruit juice with your iron is good, for delivering the Vitamin C. Iron-deficiency anemia can also cause weight gain, because it makes your metabolism super slow. Hemoglobin helps make red blood cells, which is how your body brings oxygen to all of your body. And without that, it’s complicated, but it messes up your cardio-vascular system enough to ruin your metabolism. Please have your iron levels checked! Plus, any time you are on your period you should take at least one iron supplement a day. The doctor will probably want you to take more, until you are past the anemia stage.

  155. Natalia Singh says:

    hi,

thank you so much. infact I am low in iron, infact very low in iron. your amazing. much appreciated.

I am 27, and have PSOS. I have had a surgery about 2 yrs ago to clear my tubes. After the surgery, the doc told me both tubes are clogged, no good. I have developed major stress and anxiety due to not being able to have a child naturally. My menstrual has straightened out since I have been on birth control, but recently I have been bleeding for over a month, it’s very painful, and makes me feel very weak at times throughout the day. It has not clotted or anything, just extremely heavy. And due to stress because of this problem, I have also had blood in my stool when I stress real bad now, and that has been going on for over a yr. I have went to the hospital, the dr, had a cat scan, and nothing. They just tell me it’s colitis, but I know my body, and I know it is something else. Whenever I tell the dr about it, they think I’m crazy and try to send me to a psychologist instead of actually sending me to a specialist like I need. I’ve tried to switch to a different dr, and still no luck.. I’m running out of options, and the problem gets worse over time, which makes me feel like I am running out of time.

I have low abdominal pain every single day and my back and feet hurt more each day that just moving out of bed hurts. Doctors diagnosed me with pcos and told me to go on birth control. That didn’t help. They said I went from having one cyst last year to about 7 now. No recommendation was given to me. I don’t know what to do anymore, can anyone give me feedback?

How long can I use this pills? …plz give a suitable reply

    • My PCOS Info says:

Hi Remya, there is no known or likely correlation between splenectomy and pcos or menstrual problems. There are many pcos treatments more effective and suitable for most women than ocps. Ocps do not address the underlying cause of pcos (insulin resistance) , in fact they make it worse, whilst covering up the progression.

  184. Shelly Rhodes says:

I just turned 35 and I have always had this problem. I have always thought my gut was connected to my female because both are messed up. From 16 to 25, I was treated as if I was exaggerating but put on birth control to make me happy and ease symptoms and told I had IBS from my primary. Over the course of the years, I’ve been to 7 gynos. Only the 5th one, labeled me with PCOS and Endometriosis. In my early 20’s, my cycles were sporadic and every other month but super heavy when they came. The pill (birth control) helped for awhile but then my body started rejecting it and I kept bleeding for weeks after it was suppose to stop. I got off birth control and it stopped for a bit but then I was left without anything stabilizing me. It leveled off for a bit and then went crazy again. About 6 yrs ago, I bled for 4 months straight trying to work a physical job. It made me physically and emotionally a mess. It took 5 different types of birth controls to stop it. I stayed on that for a few years and then my gall bladder scarred up and had to remove it and had a laproscopy of my female parts during the same surgery. I had a small spot of endometriosis. Then my body got worse. I was diagnosed with Celiac and Gastroparesis after 2 gastros (they were not very willing to find the cause of my swelling when I told them I had female problems), I truly believe they are connected by I haven’t been able to find a doctor that wants to really decipher these things. I have spent thousands of dollars, haven’t been able to work in 2 1/2 yrs, going on my 3rd month of bleeding again (it will stop for a few days and return). Insurance is at it’s worse and I have a husband and step son. We live in a duplex because of the financial strain my health has put us through. At the end of all this, I have not had much of a chance to conceive. I pray and try to leave it in Gods hands, but it gets very difficult to live a normal life.

  185. Ashley says:

  189. Jenn says:

I am 37, I had my tubes tied 11 years ago. My normal cycle was 3 days at the most with 1 heavy day. Recently, past 3 months, I am constantly on my period. I went to my doctor, he ran blood work and I had an ultra sound. Everything came back normal. He did order Errin, a progesterone pill. I would have been 2 full packs in but I have not stopped bleeding. I’m so emotionally drained. I stopped taking it 5 days ago and still no change.
If anyone has any advice….I am not a candidate for a hysterectomy.

  199. I hope someone can help me. I doubt I have pcos, I am possibly heading into menopause. Up till recently my periods were regular, but very heavy for 3 – 4 days (through tampons and pads in an hour) On 4 March my period started as normal, but it hasn’t stopped. Then this week (at work of all places) as I stood up from my chair I felt a clot come out with lots of blood – my pants were soaked. I went to the doc, he has given me Cyklokapron to stop the bleeding. It has decreased, but not stopped. I’m taking iron supplements because my iron levels are low due to the heavy bleeding. I’m 52. When will this end? I don’t want surgery, I’m healthy apart from this issue.

  238. Mahogany says:

I love had this happen to me when I was 20. I’ve seen so many doctors and been to the emergency room more than several times. I missed my period for two whole months. Which was not normal for me at all. I wasn’t even sexually active either. So pregnancy was not a factor in my case. Then my period came. Long story short I bleed for two whole months. I was passing clots the size of my hand. No one knew what to do with me. It got to the point where I got weak and my skin was a grayish color. I got to the point where I was like maybe it’ll just stop on its own. It didn’t. I ended up in the ER to later be admitted to the hospital for almost a week for a blood transfusion and surgery. I was terrified. I received two units of blood and was so violently I’ll during that process. My face lived in the bed pan.. The next morning was my surgery but instead of doing something invasive she decided to put me on birth control. She suspected it was a hormonal imbalance and figured bc would help me. I took 7 birth control pills a day while in the hospital. 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon, 2 in the evening, and 2 in the early hours of the morning. And guess what my bleeding stopped! After two whole months of bleeding that was a miracle. So after i was released, i had to take birth control pills twice a day for two months. My next period was extremely painful and I had to go the the er due to the pain but other than that my cycle was back to normal. And I went on to have 3 pain in my butt children. Lol

Unfortunately 10 years later it’s now happening to me again. It’s been 8 days of heavy bleeding and I already know this isn’t gonna stop. Since I’ve been through all of this before, I’m gonna make an appointment and try to get my situation taken care of. Minus the blood transfusion. That was awful. I’m trying to avoid that at all cost. But girls! Don’t wait! This is not something to take lightly. I wish y’all the best and hope that everyone in this situation has a good outcome.

  239. Avery says:

My name is Avery and I’ve been diagnosed with PCOS and dysfunctional uterus bleeding since September 24th 2014. I have been bleeding every single day for more than 2 years. Doctors at John hopkins has tried birth controls, depo, mirena iud, many choices, and none have worked for me. It won’t stop you from everyday life, it will just make you feel like not living it. Unfortunately my only solution left is to take out my uterus at age 25. But at your age, you need to talk about different options. Do your research. Some can atleast thin it out at the very least, it’s different for everyone. Good luck.

My name is dulce and I have a rare blood disorder call Glanzmannthrombasthemia. I have been on my period for 26 days and none of my doctors understand why this is happening to me. I’m desperate to find someone who understands and can help me stop this bleeding. I have history of blood transfusion and platelets transfusion. I’m tired of doctors not doing their job and help me out. What can I do to treat myself.

I went for a female wellness in May 2016. I have been taking the progestone for a couple years I believe maybe less. In October 2014 I noticed the lump under my neck lymph node region. Been to 2 ear nose and throat they say I’m good last one put tube up my nose etc. The lump has never went away or gotten smaller even with antibiotics 2 rounds. Anyway my cycle started September 17th ended November 7th and Started November 12 ended November 21st started Dec 2nd all in 2016 ended in January 19th while taking the medication to slow down heavy bleeding. I have lost 112 pounds in 1year. Saw obgyn on the 19th she wasn’t going to do an exam until I told her about all of this and the lump under my left armpit lymph node area. I have had surgery for endometriosis 2 times 1 when I was 18 once when I was 22. I have 2 beautiful boys. I’m almost 42. I get highly fatigued and have abdominal pain that doubles me over in bed. No matter what I eat or don’t. No diet pills or exercise or drugs. She upon exam said that I had a yeast infection but when tested I did not. Two weeks will have all the results of the testing back but how do I talk to my regular doctor and ask him questions about I think something is very wrong with this picture. She will refer me to the doctor at the hospital for a possible endometrial ablation and I have other health problems. Degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis, Gerd, ibs, sore throat for over 1 now yes I smoke but excessive thirst, urinating is a slow process. I have to get an opinion from someone else because I feel like no one can hear me. I drink power ade, Gatorade cut sugar and caffeine intake. This does not feel like endometriosis and I am constantly losing weight. That’s not right. They did check for diabetes I’m clear. Nothing showed up on vaginal ultrasound except they could not find my right ovary after 15 minutes I was like WHAT. ALL OPINIONS HELP.

  257. Hello… I’m 14 and going to be 15 in September, I’ve had my period cycles since 2015 and they very irregular(only had it say 6 times). When I had it for the 5th time, it lasted a month, I went to the local doctor and she said if it continues for the next 2 weeks then I should come back and have a test and in the 2 weeks it did stop. I’m on my 6th time now, and it’s been nearly 3 months ( 2 1/2) and I’m getting worried, I find myself more tired, I can’t walk in the sun for long or I feel faint and light headed. My parents know and I want to have it checked out. But – my mom doesn’t want me to (she’s all about the natural stuff and doesn’t like me heading to the doctors, doesn’t want me to do a blood test either because, I quote, ‘blood is sacred and you must never give it to them!’) My dad wants me to go to the doctors (they disagree on a lot of things). I’ve been doing my research on this and I’m not sure what it could be since all most all of the stuff I’m too young to have! I don’t know what to do, I want to see the doctor but my mom will fight against me (not literally) and my dad is hardly ever at home ( overseas a lot)
